The role of empathy in the communication

Please enjoy this short caricature explaining empathy

The role of empathy in communication

The goal is to connect with people, to be able to put yourself in their shoes, to identify with them (Stiff, Dillard, Somera, Kim & Sleight, 2009).  Occupational therapists must be able to make a connection with people in order to get them to open up (Willard & Boyt Schell, 2014).  Displays of empathy can comfort and relax a patient showing them that you see what they are experiencing (Stiff, Dillard, Somera, Kim & Sleight, 2009).  I will be conscientious of my tone, mannerism, body language, gestures and prompts when empathising with clients.
